BS Georgia Institute of Technology, 1978
MS Rice University, 1981
PhD Rice University, 1983
Dr. Magee joined the National Institute of Standards and Technology in 1984 as a National Research Council-National Academy of Sciences Research Associate after completing postdoctoral studies at Rice University. During this associateship, he conducted measurements of the molar heat capacity at constant volume for carbon dioxide. In 1986, he became a permanent staff member and is the lead scientist for adiabatic calorimetry and precise density measurements of both pure fluids and mixtures. He has updated an existing heat capacity calorimeter and a constant volume pressure-volume-temperature apparatus to enable automated operation of these instruments.
He has designed and constructed a constant volume calorimeter and a
thermoelectric flow calorimeter which measure corrosive and reactive
fluids at high temperatures with no loss of accuracy. His recent
research interests have included ammonia-water mixtures, natural gas
mixtures, carbon dioxide-rich mixtures, air, natural gas liquids, and
alternative refrigerants. Dr. Magee was Associate Editor of The Journal
of Chemical and Engineering Data from 1998 until 2005. Dr. Magee headed
the Experimental Properties of Fluids Group from January, 2000, until
May, 2005.
